Quitting My Job With No Back-Up Plan... It's A Bad Idea, Right?
F**k It. It’s Fine.
This morning, I woke up to a text from my best friend saying, "Happy 3-year I-quit-my-job anniversary!"
And it got me thinking:
No one talks about how terrifying it can be to admit to yourself that you aren't comfortable staying complacent. After years of convincing yourself that your goals are too far-fetched because beliefs like "You should just be happy you have a job" or "That's how it was for me; you just have to pay your dues and wait your turn," or "You need a job with a pension," have been so deeply ingrained in your soul from every angle of life, even your own minor thoughts of disobeying them make you feel like you'll burn in eternal hellfire for daring to be different.
This was my internal dialogue daily for over a decade.
"Play it safe, Mindy. No one likes anyone that dreams too big or dares too often.'
"You're just a girl from a suburb in Ohio. Clock in at 9. Clock out at 5. That's what a good Mom/Wife/Daughter does."
"You can't go into content creation or dare to lead a life as an influencer. Everyone you know will make fun of you. Loose high school acquaintances will talk about you. The mean girls at work will share your posts back and forth and pick them apart at the lunch table when you're not around."
The list goes on and on. And while some of those things may actually happen (I know that lunch table was all riled up more than once), the minute I stopped letting those thoughts overwhelm me. I started taking accountability in admitting that I wanted a bigger life – That I was ALLOWED to simply WANT a bigger life. Everything changed.
Fear turned to anger, which was easily channeled into motivation, and it felt like I awoke from a dream where I realized this was MY life and no one else's. Yes, what I do and how I do it will affect others, but ultimately, how I choose to spend 40 hours a week to pay the bills is of no one else's business but my own.
Over the next few weeks, we'll talk a lot about how I've been able to build an online business, freelance, and work remotely on a schedule that works for me. But before we get into the tactical things. The mindset really is EVERYTHING.
This isn't a life that many can relate to. But EVERYONE seems to have an opinion on it, and they love to give it to you, solicited or not. Always remember this – No one can control your narrative better than you. And just because the advice comes from someone you respect, love, or admire, it does NOT mean it's advice you NEED to take. It may not be relevant to your current situation, and that is 100% OK.
So, where to start?
Here are 3 books that helped me climb this mountain of self-sabotage and turn my inner dialogue around. (FYI: This is a mountain that I have yet to summit. It's a work in progress.)
The Courage To Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga
*If you only start with one on this list, start here. I attribute this book to single-handedly curing my imposter syndrome.
The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest
Motivation Manifesto by Brendon Burchard
*Now, I'm a physical book girlie, but I've recently resorted to audiobooks as I take on my full-time role as a chauffeur for my children's travel sports. Audible has been a GAMECHANGER for allowing me to keep up with my reading in our chaotic life.
